Estado de extrema desnutrición, atrofia muscular, fatiga, debilidad, fuerte rigidez del cuerpo con disminución evidente del peso corporal y pérdida general de la fuerza; anorexia en personas que no están tratando activamente de perder peso. Se observa en enfermedades tumorales, enfermedades infecciosas crónicas, trastornos severos del metabolismo o condicionada por alimentación deficiente o hambruna.
