En raison de son origine embryologique, il se distingue par le neurocrâne membraneux formé par les os plats de la calotte et le neurocrâne cartilagineux formé par les os de la base du crâne. Il est d'origine cartilagineuse et est formé de 8 os : les os pariétal, temporal, frontal, ethmoïde, sphénoïde et occipital.
