Malaria o paludismo es una enfermedad producida por parásitos del género Plasmodium, y es probable que se haya transmitido al ser humano a través de los gorilas occidentales. Es la primera enfermedad de importancia entre las enfermedades debilitantes. Entre 700.000 y 2,7 millones de personas mueren al año por causa de la malaria, de los cuales más del 75 % son niños en zonas endémicas de África.
