Matriz extracelular especializada rodea al ovocito en desarrollo dentro del ovario y tras la ovulación. El ovocito sintetiza y secreta cada una de las glicoproteínas de la zona pelúcida ZP1, ZP2 y ZP3, que se unen a la matriz insoluble de la zona pelúcida. Las proteínas tienen diferentes funciones en la fecundación. Tras la fecundación, la zona pelúcida también rodea al blastocisto durante la primera semana de desarrollo.
