Pertenece a la corteza asociativa auditiva específica y está situada inmediatamente detrás y debajo de la corteza auditiva primaria (área de Heschl). Desempeña un papel fundamental en la descodificación de la información auditiva de valor lingüístico interviniendo en su comprensión y en la producción del habla con significado. <(A): Wernike areal: Bereich der Großhirnrinde, der von der hinteren Hälfte des linken ersten Gyrus temporalis und dem angrenzenden Teil des zweiten Gyrus temporalis gebildet wird. Es gehört zum spezifischen auditorischen Assoziationskortex und befindet sich unmittelbar hinter und unter dem primären auditorischen Kortex (Heschl-Areal). Er spielt eine grundlegende Rolle bei der Dekodierung auditiver Informationen von linguistischem Wert und ist an deren Verständnis und an der Produktion von sinnvoller Sprache beteiligt.
