Está situado en el área vestibular bulboprotuberancial. Es el núcleo vestibular más voluminoso y con mayor población neuronal, poseyendo unas 128.000 neuronas. Proyecta sus eferencias a través del fascículo longitudinal medial sobre las motoneuronas e interneuronas del núcleo del III par craneal homolateral y contralateral, sobre las motoneuronas del núcleo del IV par craneal y finalmente da origen al fascículo vestibuloespinal medial para los núcleos supraespinal y cervical central. Por tanto a través de estas conexiones participa en los reflejos vestibulo-oculares y posturales compensatorios. Tiene también conexiones con el cerebelo.

Er ist der größte vestibuläre Nukleus mit der größten Neuronenpopulation, die etwa 128.000 Neuronen umfasst. Er projiziert seine Efferenzen durch den medialen longitudinalen Faszikel auf die motorischen Neuronen und Interneuronen des homolateralen und kontralateralen Hirnnervenkerns III, auf die motorischen Neuronen des Hirnnervenkerns IV und führt schließlich zum medialen vestibulospinalen Faszikel für die supraspinalen und zentralen zervikalen Kerne. Über diese Verbindungen ist es daher an den vestibulo-okularen und kompensatorischen Haltungsreflexen beteiligt. Es hat auch Verbindungen zum Kleinhirn.
