<(In.): Deep petrosal nerve: origin: this is a branch of the internal carotid sympathetic plexus. Course and distribution: this nerve begins from the plexus of postganglionic sympathetic nerves, which lie on the internal carotid artery as that artery forms its siphon, between its intrapetrous and cavernous parts. It then immediately joins the greater petrosal nerve at the foramen lacerum in order to become the nerve of the pterygoid canal. It therefore provides the nerve of the pterygoid canal with postganglionic sympathetic fibers whose cell bodies lie in the superior cervical ganglion of the sympathetic chain. Branches: visceral branches; fiber types: GVE, which are visceral motor fibers to the structure in the head and neck region for cervical spinal cord. Root: ventral intermediolateral horn of C1-C4 spinal cord segments.
