Nervus petrosus profundus: nace en el oído medio del nervio de Jacobson, ramo del glosofaríngeo. Dos de las ramas mas superiores del plexo timpánico que forma el nervio de Jacobson, atraviesan el tegmen timpany por conductos especiales, formando este nervio que se une al homologo del facial formando el nervio vidiano. Muchos anatomistas ponen en duda la existencia de este nervio reconociendo un solo nervio petroso profundo.

<(In.): Nervus petrosus major; greater petrosal nerve: the parasympathetic root of the pterygopalatine ganglion; a branch from the genu of the facial nerve exiting via the hiatus of the facial canal and running in a groove on the anterior surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone beside the foramen lacerum to join the deep petrosal nerve, thus forming the nerve of the pterygoid canal, which passes through the pterygoid canal to reach the pterygopalatine ganglion. Synonym: nervus petrosus major, greater petrosal nerve.
